SlickRun and Remote Desktop

I’ve been using SlickRun for over a year now. It took some getting used to but now I can’t live without it.

I frequently have to use Remote Desktop at work to access our servers, especially in our dev environment, so I created a SlickRun keyword, ‘remote’ that opened up Remote Desktop.

This was great until I realized that I only really accessed a handful of servers, so I figured I could make life even easier by adding a keyword for each server into SlickRun and then pass the server name into Remote Desktop so it would just connect automatically. I’ve been using this method for about two weeks now, and its awesome.

Heres an example:

I have RD into a good number of servers so I do something very similar, except pass in the name of the server with the command. So in my parameters i have “/v $W$” and then I can hit my hotkey and type “rd {serverName}”

Thats a good idea Joe, I didn’t know you could embed parameters like that, cool!

Though I love automation like this, I found an application to manage my RDP sessions: visionapp Remote Desktop. It’s awesome. You can record your credentials in one location and apply them in a hierarchical fashion.

There is also another program called Launchy (http://www.launchy.net) that indexes the programs on your system. I simply hit alt-space and type vm and my vmware worstation starts. You should check it out.

Hi drew, I actually checked out launchy a couple weeks ago. I didn’t like it because it seemed like you had to type the actual name of the program (visual studio) instead of making shortcuts like I can in slickrun (vs = Visual Studio 2005).

    Is this possible in launchy?
