Arctic Monkeys show – no encore?

I went and saw the Arctic Monkeys on Monday night at First Avenue downtown. The show was pretty good, their equipment was setup very well, I didn’t need to wear earplugs like I normally do.

After playing for a little over an hour, the band left the stage and the crowd starting cheering for an encore. About 30 seconds later the lights came on and the crew was taking the stuff off the stage. I think that was the first time I’ve ever seen a band NOT come back for an encore. Its not like the crowd was cheering or didn’t like them.

When the lights came back on, people were kind of looking around like “seriously?”. It was strange.

Has anyone else seen them on their tour? Was there an encore at your show?

unless things have changed in the last 2 years, The Strokes do not play encores either.

i wasn’t surprised that AM didn’t play one, they busted through 20 or 21 tunes in like 70 minutes, which was a good portion of their catalog, leaving only a few songs (which i’d have loved to hear 505) to play.

I saw The Get Up Kids play the Triple Rock a few years ago; it was the first stop on their tour and they went in planning to not to any encores. After the set the music came on and the house lights came up, but the crowd wouldn’t move, they just kept cheering and clapping and chanting ‘encore’. After a few minutes the lights went back down and the band came back out; I think they were flattered. They explained that they hadn’t planned to do encores, but were wondering if that plan was going to work out.

Well, if not playing encores is acceptable sometimes, then I guess I have no beef. I still think its weird because you might make the crowd think you were pissed or something.

In the case of the arctic monkeys, since they already had played most of their stuff, I thought it would be cool to do a Beatles or an Oasis cover, maybe a slower song to contrast with their style.

Wow, I’m impressed that you saw Arctic Monkeys. They’re one of my new interests. Were they any good live? Have you checked out the Cat Empire? Or Cold War Kids? I think you’d like ‘em. :)

Saw them last night (May 15) and nope, no encore. They played just about everything except for 4 or 5 songs though, but I’d have liked to have heard Mardy Bum and 505.

As to the first poster, I’ve seen the Strokes 5 times in 3 different cities and they’ve always played an encore, so maybe they just don’t like you.
